Keating Down in Polls

SYDNEY ( -- Australia's political leaders hit the campaign trail Monday as new opinion polls show the opposition conservative Liberal-National party coalition has made big gains over Prime Minister Paul Keating's Labor Party government.

Keating, who has been prime minister for four of Labor's 13 years in power, has called a parliamentary election for March 2.

He's shrugged off the latest polls, one of which puts the opposition a massive 14 percentage points ahead of the government -- more than enough for a Liberal-National landslide.

Many analysts are also treating the poll results with caution, saying it is too early to gauge voter sentiments.
