Ireland Peace Threat

BELFAST () -- Suspected IRA gunmen killed a postal worker in Northern Ireland on Thursday in a bungled holdup which shattered a 10-week peace, but the IRA's political wing insisted its cease-fire was still in place.

Security sources said police arrested two men who came from known Catholic Republican families after the slaying in an attempted raid on a Post Office sorting station in Newry, about 50 kilometers south of Belfast.

The Dublin government responded by abruptly canceling early release orders for nine convicted IRA member. However in a telephoned statement to Downtown radio in Belfast the IRA insisted: "On August 31, the IRA's leadership announced a complete cessation of military operations. All our units were advised accordingly. This position has not changed."
