IRA Prisoners Released

n PORT LAOISE, Ireland () -- An IRA prisoner who shot his way out of a British jail was among the first of 39 prisoners to walk out of a top-security prison Friday under a controversial goodwill gesture by the Irish government.

Nessan Quinlivan, who escaped from Brixton prison in south London in 1991 while awaiting trial on charges of conspiracy to murder the Whitbread brewery chief, Sir Charles Tidbury, walked to a waiting car and drove away for one week's Christmas leave.

Nine prisoners from the Irish Republican Army, including two convicted of murder, were freed under the amnesty together with 30 allowed home for a week for Christmas. The Irish government says it is making the gesture to support the peace process in Belfast.
