Indian Ministers Resign

NEW DELHI () -- Three cabinet ministers resigned from Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao's government following opposition protests over two major scandals, local news agencies reported Thursday.

They said President Shankar Dayal Sharma accepted the resignations of Health Minister B. Shankaranand, Junior Rural Development Minister Rameshwar Thakur and Food Minister Kalpnath Rai.

Rai was indicted by an official inquiry in a 25 billion-rupee ($796 million) sugar muddle.

Thakur and Shankaranand were named in a India's worst-ever financial scandal, in which bankers and brokers in 1992 colluded to siphon $1.3 billion, mainly from government securities, to play at the Bombay Stock Exchange.
