Hungarian Coalition

BUDAPEST -- Hungary's Socialist Party, which won a majority of seats in last month's general election, has announced agreed terms for a broad-based reformist coalition government with the liberal Alliance of Free Democrats. "We have agreed on basically every issue," Socialist leader Gyula Horn, a former Communist who will become Hungary's next prime minister under the pact, told reporters Wednesday after a bargaining session between Socialist and Free Democrat leaders. The accord seeks to form a durable partnership that has the political muscle to implement tough reforms deemed necessary to shore up Hungary's shaky state finances and lay the groundwork for future prosperity.
