Gunmen Kill Colonel

DUSHANBE () -- Gunmen in the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan shot dead a Russian army colonel as he walked his dog Tuesday in the capital Dushanbe, military officials said.

The Tajikistan defense ministry officials, who declined to be named, said Colonel Vladimir Kotsar, 44, was an instructor at Tajik state university's military department.

Several Russian officers and soldiers have been murdered in Dushanbe and other towns over the past few months in sporadic flare-ups that still buffet this Central Asian state following a civil war in late 1992.
