Grain-for-Fuel Swap

Russia's oil-producing region of Bashkortostan will supply diesel fuel, petrol and lubricants this year to the farming heartland of Stavropol in exchange for 200,000 tons of grain, Itar-Tass said Thursday.

Many Russian farmers are suffering shortages of fuel equipment and fertilizers needed for spring sowing.

Itar-Tass said the barter deal with the Stavropol region followed a similar accord between Bashkortostan, a semi-autonomous republic in the southern Urals, and Azerbaijan.
