Germans Trounce Austrians

VIENNA -- World champion Germany bounced back from a surprise defeat by Ireland over the weekend with a 5-1 thrashing of neighboring Austria in a friendly international. A double strike by Andreas M?ller in the second half and goals by Matthias Sammer, J--rgen Klinsmann and Mario Basler swept the Germans to victory on Thursday. Austria's only reply to Germany's onslaught came from a penalty in the 77th minute by captain Toni Polster. M?ller scored his first goal for Germany in the 50th minute when the Austrian defense gave him a free run down the right, and his second goal came from a 66th minute header. Klinsmann netted between M?ller's goals, stumbling just inside the penalty box but not being tackled, a mistake that cost Austria dearly. Germany's last goal on the stroke of time followed an indirect free kick awarded after Wohlfahrt had picked up a backpass. Karlheinz Riedle's dead-ball kick found Basler, who smashed the ball home. In post-game violence, a 25-year-old German man was stabbed in the chest in a melee that erupted outside the stadium near Vienna's famous Prater amusement park. He was flown by helicopter to a Vienna hospital in serious condition. Numerous other injuries were reported, including 11 Vienna policemen trying to control the crowd, Austrian television said.
