MOSCOW () -- Mayor Yury Luzhkov ordered a sharp hike in fuel prices Monday, boosting the cost of premium gasoline by 50 percent effective Tuesday, Interfax reported.

The news agency quoted "unnamed sources" in the mayor's office as saying that A-76 and A-92 gasolines would cost 650 rubles (19 cents) and 750 rubles per liter, respectively, up from 400 and 500 rubles. Other types of fuel would go up between 20 and 25 percent, Interfax said.

The price hike would be the second in as many months.
