Czechs Back Rockwell

PRAGUE () -- Czech Defense Minister Vilem Holan said Monday that Rockwell International Corp. is his choice to upgrade 72 L-159 trainer aircraft, made by the Czech company Aero Vodochody a.s., into a combat jet for the Czech army.

Holan told a news conference that U.S.-based Rockwell "has to be the supplier of avionics" for the L-159, the Czech news agency CTK reported. Speaking after a meeting with Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus, he said the Defense Ministry has the final decision.

But he said suppliers for further upgrades would have to be decided by shareholders of Aero Vodochody.
