A senior Russian Orthodox official called on authorities Wednesday to investigate and ban novels by Vladimir Nabokov and Gabriel Garcia Marquez for "justifying pedophilia."
Father Vsevolod Chaplin, who heads the Moscow Patriarchate's public relations department, said Nabokov's "Lolita" and Garcia Marquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude" should not be included in high school curriculums as they "romanticize perverted passions that make people unhappy."
Kremlin envoy Mikhail Shvydkoi disagreed, saying a ban by authorities would badly hurt Russia's image.
