China Votes Eugenics

BEIJING ) -- China's legislature on Thursday ratified a controversial eugenics law restricting marriage by people suffering from mental problems or contagious diseases.

The eugenics law, called the Maternal and Infantile Health Care Law, is to go into effect next June 1. Reports in Hong Kong said the name was changed in an effort to make the law less offensive. The words "eugenics" and "inferior births" reportedly have been stricken from the final version of the legislation.
