China Berates Taiwan

BEIJING () -- After test-firing four missiles off Taiwan in a show of strength, China launched into a war of words Monday with Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui, saying his attempt to create an independent state was doomed.

"Taiwan is an inalienable part of China," state radio quoted the commentary, to be published in Tuesday's People's Daily, as saying. "This is the fact that cannot be changed by any challenges in the world."

Political analysts said the tests, involving launches of long-range missiles toward a target area 140 kilometers north of Taiwan, were intended as a warning to Taiwan to ease off attempts to increase its global recognition.
