Carter to Turn Pro

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania () -- Penn State running back Ki-Jana Carter announced that he will give up his senior year of eligibility and apply for the National Football League draft.


"Because of my years at Penn State, I am ready to face the challenges ahead," an emotional Carter told a news conference Monday.


Penn State Coach Joe Paterno had advised Carter to apply for the draft and forego his final year.


Carter had an outstanding season for the Nittany Lions, rushing for 1,539 yards and 23 touchdowns on 198 carries. He finished second behind Colorado's Rashaan Salaam in the Heisman Trophy voting.
