Boeing Breakthrough

A deal for Russia's Aeroflot international airline to lease four Boeing 767-300 ER long-range jets will go ahead now Russian worries over expense have been overcome, U.S. Commerce Secretary Ron Brown said Wednesday

"We have finally broken through on the Boeing aircraft deal after conversations with Prime Minister Chernomyrdin and today President Yeltsin," he told journalists

The deal was announced last month but Aeroflot officials have since said the estimated $300 million cost was too high. Aeroflot has since discussed cutting the number of planes to two and the time period from the planned five years.

Brown, on the third day of a visit to Moscow, did not specify exactly how the problem had been solved.

"The tariff problem, that was a problem before, is no longer a problem, and those aircraft will be delivered to Russia in early April," he said.
