Belarus Army Cleared

MINSK ) -- Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko has absolved the military of blame for shooting down a U.S. hot air balloon last month and killing two American pilots.

In a two-hour television broadcast late Monday, Lukashenko ignored U.S. denunciations of the incident in which a helicopter fired on the balloon as it took part in an international competition.

"When these balloons appeared in our country's airspace, the military dealt with them as with someone violating our borders," he said. "Our military is absolutely not guilty in any way."
