Becker Bypasses Cup

BONN -- Germany named its team for a forthcoming Davis Cup quarterfinal against Spain, but left out Boris Becker after the Wimbledon semifinalist withdrew at the last minute. German coach Niki Pilic said Becker had not spoken to him. He named world No. 3 Michael Stich along with Karsten Braasch, Marc Goellner and Patrik Kuehnen to face Spain on the grass courts at Halle on July 15 to 17. Becker's withdrawal followed a cat and mouse game in which he pulled out after winning his first round match at Wimbledon, only to say five days later that he wanted to play.
