Balt Drives Her Busload Crazy

VILNIUS, Lithuania -- A trolley bus driver in Vilnius terrified her passengers when she began zooming through the city singing hymns and shouting "Heil Hitler," the Baltic News Service said Friday.

None of the passengers, whom the woman alternately denounced as either "reds" or "fascists," was injured.

Vilnius police succeeded in stopping the electric trolley bus before it hit anything.

Witnesses said that the driver began driving at speed down city streets while on a regular run to the central railway station.

She was reported to have zipped past other cars while alternately singing hymns and shouting out at the top of her voice, "Heil Hitler!"

The driver, a 56-year-old veteran of the city transport system, was taken to a mental hospital.

Transport officials in Lithuania maintained that the woman had recently been "certified sane and suitable for work."
