Angola Accord Delayed

LUSAKA () -- The Angolan government and UNITA rebels have postponed signing a peace agreement to end Angola's nearly 20-year-old civil war, a UN official said Monday.

The pact was due to be signed in Zambia's capital Lusaka on Tuesday.

The United Nations brokered the peace pact between Angola's government and its UNITA rebel foes and it was initialed in Lusaka last month after nearly a year of negotiations. Formal signing of the accord by UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi and Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos was jeopardized by a government military offensive against rebel positions this month.
