BAKU, Azerbaijan () -- President Heidar Aliyev imposed a two-month state of emergency on Azerbaijan's second-largest city Tuesday, a week after his forces put down a coup attempt there.


The decree bans mass meetings in Gyandzha, suspends the activities of political parties and beefs up the presence of security forces.


It also restricts entry into the city and orders security forces to oust all nonresidents.


A similar decree has been in force in Baku, the capital, since a three-day uprising began Oct. 3.


Gyandzha, an opposition stronghold in western Azerbaijan, was temporarily under rebel control during the attempted coup and officials fear more unrest.


Last week Aliyev accused Prime Minister Suret Huseinov of masterminding the Gyandzha mutiny and fired him.


However, no charges have been filed against Huseinov, who has denied the allegation.
