Aircraft Work on Hold

KOMSOMOLSK-ON-AMUR, Far East () -- Crippled by cuts and declining demand, a major aircraft factory has put most of its workers on leave until January, Itar-Tass said Thursday.

The Komsomolsk Aircraft Factory, the main producer of the Su-27 fighter plane, ceased all production of military equipment in late November, though it continues to produce consumer goods and civilian aircraft.

Viktor Merkulov, general director of the factory, said that production of military equipment has dropped to 5.5 percent of 1991 levels, Itar-Tass reported.
