48 Massacred in Liberia

MONROVIA, Liberia ) -- Rebels rampaged through a Monrovia suburb, stabbing and burning people alive as fighting in the five-year-old civil war returned to the capital. At least 48 people died.

It was the worst reported massacre in Liberia in more than a year, and half the victims were babies, children and women, said Isaac Moses, a doctor at Monrovia's John F. Kennedy Hospital.

The killings marked the first such violence in Monrovia since rebel leader Charles Taylor tried to seize the capital in a battle that lasted from October 1992 until January 1993.

It was unclear which faction committed the attack.
