Ruble Hits. Low of 342

The Moscow Times
The ruble continued its headlong plunge on Tuesday, falling to a new low of 342 to the dollar from 309 in trading on the Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange.

The ruble plummeted to 309 from 254 to the dollar at the previous trading session on Thursday. It had traded at 168. 1 on Aug. 25.

The volume traded returned to the high levels of previous weeks with $62. 48 million sold.

Exchange officials said the fall in the ruble was now faster than the rate of inflation.

Fears that the government would alter the rules on foreign-currency earnings were bolstered by President Boris Yeltsin's remarks to parliament on Tuesday.
