Forty years ago this summer, Radio Mayak went on air as the Soviet Union's first national station to broadcast through the night. The first sound that listeners heard was the radio's signal, based on the song "Moscow Nights," that remains unchanged to this day. The station featured concerts and records, as well as news on the half hour from correspondents including journalist Konstanin Retinsky, pictured below. To celebrate the anniversary, the radio's web site is displaying rare archive pictures. Photograph by Boris Vdovenko, courtesy of www.radiomayak.ru.
