In his 2005 canvas "Mao and Marilyn Monroe," Beijing artist Shi Xinning juxtaposes two of the best-known cultural icons of the 20th century. The painting goes on display this weekend at the Tretyakov Gallery in an exhibition titled "Sots-Art: Political Art in Russia and China," a special project of the Moscow Biennale. The exhibition presents works of sots-art, a movement that began in the Soviet Union but later became popular in other countries, especially China. The exhibition runs to April 1 at the New Tretyakov Gallery, located at 1 Krymsky Val.
