Van Poppel Wins Stage

BOULOGNE-SUR-MER, France Dutch cyclist Jean-Paul Van Poppel won the second stage of the Tour de France over 203 kilometers from Roubaix on Monday. German Olaf Ludwig was second and Silvio Martinello of Italy third. Briton Chris Boardman retained the yellow jersey. Also on Monday, Frenchman Laurent Jalabert underwent surgery for injuries he sustained in a terrible crash on Sunday. Belgian Wilfried Nelissen crashed into a policeman during a high-speed sprint just 50 meters from the finish. About 10 riders fell, including Jalabert, who was taken to the hospital with head injuries, broken teeth and possible facial bone fractures. Tour director Jean-Marie Leblanc claimed that the policeman caused the crash by standing in the wrong position, but local police officials contradicted this, issuing a statement that the officer was in his assigned position.
