Prix Title Near Last Lap

SUZUKA, Japan -- With only two races left in the season, Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix will decide the fates of both Michael Schumacher and archrival Damon Hill.

If Schumacher finishes first or second, with Hill at least 6 points behind, Schumacher will become the first German to win the Formula One driver's overall championship.

"It's a much tougher challenge than just getting a good result,'' Hill said about his pursuit of Schumacher.

With his easy victory in the European Grand Prix in Jerez, Spain, for a driver's points total of 86, Schumacher, driving a Benetton-Ford, is now closest to winning the championship. Hill, who drives a Williams-Renault, is 5 points behind.

Schumacher, who missed two races after being suspended for ignoring a black flag in the July 10 British Grand Prix, says he remains determined to win even though Hill caught up to him during his absence.

"The only driver who can be the world champion is me,'' Schumacher said.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
