Police raided the house in which they were held after receiving information from a fourth hostage, an American, who was freed Monday.
The gun battle was in the northern Indian town of Saharanpur, about 50 kilometers east of New Delhi.
The kidnappers had threatened to behead their hostages and demanded the release of 10 Moslem militants.
Indian police have arrested five men in connection with the kidnapping.
