Playoff Hopefuls Trip Again

NEW YORK -- On the way to the NFL playoffs, Kansas City, Minnesota and Philadelphia forgot to win in November. And the results could be costly when it comes time to figure out division champions and wild cards.

On Sunday, the Chiefs, Vikings and Eagles all lost again, giving the trio a combined 1-8 record the past three weeks. And here's a twist: they all got beat by field goals indoors.

At the Kingdome, John Kasey kicked a 38-yard field goal with 1:48 left to lift Seattle to a 12-9 victory over the Chiefs (7-5), who lost Joe Montana to a sprained left foot in the third quarter. The loss put Kansas City two games behind first-place San Diego in the AFC West. Montana's status is unknown.

"I can't tell you anything at this time," said coach Marty Schottenheimer, as concerned about Montana as he is a winless November.

At the Metrodome, the Vikings (7-5) lost their third straight when Eric Guilford botched a punt, Tampa Bay recovered and Michael Husted kicked a 22-yard field goal 2:08 into OT for a 20-17 win.

The Vikings trail Chicago by a game in the NFC Central, and the teams meet Thursday night at Minnesota.

"If we want to get anywhere, we better bounce back," said Minnesota receiver Qadry Ismail. "If we want to feel sorry for ourselves, the Bears will have a feast."

At the Georgia Dome, the Eagles (7-5) lost their third straight, despite two TDs by Herschel Walker, one a 91-yarder. Jeff George threw for 36 yards and two TDs to Terance Mathis in Atlanta's 28-21 victory.

"It's been a very tough three weeks," said Eagles coach Rich Kotite. "We're still in it and I hope we can pull out of it. We're all very frustrated at this point."

On Monday night, San Francisco is at New Orleans. On Thursday, Dallas beat Green Bay 42-31 and Detroit defeated Buffalo 35-21.

In Sunday's games:

Seahawks 10, Chiefs 9. With Montana's left foot being X-rayed, Seattle (5-7) scored 10 fourth-quarter points to steal a win. Steve Smith scored on a 2-yard run early in the fourth before Kasey kicked the winning field goal. Montana, who had 163 yards passing before his injury, became the fifth NFL quarterback to surpass 40,000 career yards.

Buccaneers 20, Vikings 17, OT. Husted's winning kick ended a six-game losing streak for Tampa Bay (3-9). The winning play was set up when one of Guilford's teammate ran into him and caused a fumble that was recovered by Ed Brady at the Minnesota.

Falcons 28, Eagles 21. The play of George and Mathis offset Walker's 91-yard TD run, the NFL's longest from scrimmage since Bo Jackson went 92 yards five years ago.

Dolphins 28, Jets 24. At East Rutherford, N.J., Dan Marino threw four second-half TDs to Mark Ingram -- the final one from 8 yards with 22 seconds left -- to give Miami (8-4) a two-game lead in the AFC East.

Patriots 12, Colts 10. At Indianapolis, Matt Bahr's fourth field goal, a 42-yarder with 4:01 to go boosted New England (6-6) into a three-way tie with the Jets and Buffalo for second place in the AFC East. Indianapolis (5-6) took a 10-9 lead on Dean Biassuci's 50-yard field goal with 10:22 left.

Browns 34, Oilers 10. At Cleveland, Vinny Tesatverde threw two second-quarter TD passes in his first full game in six weeks and Leroy Hoard ran for 103 yards and two more TDs as Houston (1-11) lost its eighth straight.

Steelers 21, Raiders 3. At Los Angeles, Mike Tonczak threw two TD passes -- 27 yards to Yancey Thigpen and 15 yards to Eric Green -- and Pittsburgh (9-3) had five sacks and held the Raiders (6-6) to 179 total yards.

Bears 19, Cardinals 16, OT. At Tempe, Arizona, Kevin Butler kicked Chicago (8-4) into first place. Butler's fourth field goal of the day, a 27-yarder with 6:49 left in overtime, gave Chicago its one-game lead over the Vikings. Steve Walsh is 7-0 as a starter.

Broncos 15, Bengals 13. At Mile High Stadium, Denver (6-6) hit .500 for the first time this season as Jason Elam kicked three field goals and John Elway (21 of 38 for 239 yards) threw a 16-yard TD pass to Anthony Miller.

Chargers 31, Rams 17. At San Diego, Darrien Gordon returned a punt 75 yards for a TD and intercepted a pass in the end zone -- both in the third quarter -- to lead San Diego (9-3). Cornerback Gear Vanhorse sealed the win when he intercepted a Chris Miller pass and returned it 50 yards for a TD with 51 seconds left.

Giants 21, Redskins 19. At Washington, Dave Brown threw two TD passes and ran for another as New York (5-7) won its second straight after a seven-game losing streak. Brown wasn't bothered by a cold, driving rain as he hit 10 of 17 passes for 161 yards. Rodney Hampton carried 34 times for 106 yards. The Redskins started Heath Shuler, who did not fare well (11 of 29 for 165 yards). Washington, which got four field goals from Chip Lohmiller, is 0-7 at home this season.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
