Minali Takes Fifth Stage

PORTSMOUTH, England -- Italy's Nicola Minali finished in first place Thursday during the fifth stage of the Tour de France, over a course covering 187 kilometers of southern English countryside outside Portsmouth. Minali, riding for Gewiss-Ballen, finished the stage in 4 hours, 10 minutes, 49 seconds. Italian Flaio Vanzella retained the leader's yellow jersey for the second day, with an overall time of 21 hours, 44 minutes, 55 seconds. Belgian Johan Museeuw, from whom Vanzella snatched the lead Wednesday, remained in second place, four seconds behind the leader. Spain's Miguel Indurain retained the third spot, 14 seconds back. American Lance Armstrong was in the fourth position, 26 seconds out from the lead. (AP, MT)
