About 5,000 cyclists escorted Delgado, winner of the Tour de France in 1988 and twice winner of the Tour of Spain, into the heart of the city where he was greeted Sunday by around 15,000 fans.
"When your legs give in you know it's time to make a sad decision," Delgado told them. "But on a day like today I realize I have a lot of friends behind me."
In Bordeaux, France, on Saturday, Switzerland's Tony Rominger shattered the world one-hour cycling record by covering 53.832 kilometers in a superb display of power and strength. He beat the previous world mark of Miguel Indurain of Spain who covered 53.040 kilometers on the same track last month.
