A new metro station will open together with the new stadium for the city's Spartak football club on Aug. 27, Interfax reported Saturday, citing the city's construction department.
Spartak station will be located between the Shchukinskaya and Tushinskaya stations on the Purple Line. The station was almost completed in Soviet times, but never opened due to a forecasted lack of potential passenger traffic. With the opening of the new stadium, that does not seem likely to be an issue.
According to the metro development program approved by Moscow City Hall in 2012, the government aims to open 83 new stations and 157.5 kilometers of new lines by 2020.
In addition to the Spartak station, the city government this year plans to open Kotelniki station as an extension of the Purple Line in the east of Moscow, outside the ring road, as well as three new stations extending the Red Line to the southwest: Troparevo, Rumyantsevo and Salaryevo.
