Gold Goes to Germany's Frenzel in Nordic Combined

KRASNAYA POLYANA — Germany's Eric Frenzel kept clear of the pack to take gold in the men's Nordic combined normal hill/10-kilometer event at the Sochi Olympics on Wednesday.

Frenzel, who started the cross-country skiing stage in the lead after winning the opening ski jump, won by 4.2 seconds from Akito Watabe, who becomes the first Japanese athlete in 20 years to win a Nordic combined medal.

That chasing pack engaged in a sprint finish for the bronze, a race won by Norway's Magnus Krog, who crossed the finish line 8.1 seconds behind Frenzel.

Nordic combined brings together ski jumping and cross-country skiing, with athletes earning time advantages in the skiing if they score higher in the jumping. The winner is the first athlete across the line in the skiing stage.

It is the last remaining men-only sport in the Winter Olympics. The large hill event is Tuesday, with the team competition two days later.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
