Twenty years ago today, on Jan. 13, 1994, President Bill Clinton kicked off a visit to Moscow by accepting a loaf of brown bread in a bakery, chatting with shoppers queuing in a sausage shop and, inside a newly rebuilt Russian Orthodox cathedral, lighting a candle in honor of his mother, who died the previous week.
