Gravestones in Novosibirsk Cemetery Damaged by 3 Boys

Three boys went on a rampage in a Novosibirsk region cemetery, gorging themselves on candy and damaging a dozen gravestones, Interfax reported Monday.

According to the local investigative committee, the suspects — two 8-year-olds and a 6-year-old — went to the cemetery to eat sweets which had been left on the graves by mourners .

The boys then began to break vases and flower pots before turning their attention to the gravestones, which they rocked back and forth and tipped over.

Preliminary reports indicate that twelve gravestones were damaged in the cemetery in Toguchinsky district, about 3,000 kilometers east of Moscow.

The three boys have been detained by the police.

"The boys haven't reached the age of responsibility, and so the bill for compensation of the damage will be left with their parents," said the regional Interior Ministry, estimating the amount at tens of thousands of rubles.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
