70 Houses Burn Down

At least 70 of the 95 buildings in the Dagestani village of Tsibari, located high in the mountains, were destroyed Tuesday in a fire fueled by strong wind, Interfax reported, citing a spokesman for the local Emergency Situations Ministry.

None of the village’s 397 inhabitants was harmed. Residents were evacuated and housed in a nearby school, the report said.

Heavy firefighting machinery could not reach the village, which is located a kilometer away from the nearest source of water, the ministry spokesman was quoted as saying.

Stashes of firewood stored in most yards for the upcoming winter fueled the fire, which spread rapidly because the village’s veranda-style homes were located close to one another, the report said.
