$33M for Police Badges

It will cost taxpayers up to 1 billion rubles ($33 million) to introduce U.S. sheriff-style badges for police officers — a measure proposed by President Dmitry Medvedev as part of his police reform, an Interior Ministry official said Tuesday.

Svetlana Perova spoke about the costs of equipping every member of the country’s 1.2 million-member police force with metal identification badges at a session of the State Duma’s Security Committee, RBC.ru reported. She added that the sum was an early estimate and may be reduced.
