A Dagestani mayor was shot dead Monday while attempting to negotiate with suspected militants, including his own brother, the local Interior Ministry said.
Police surrounded the suspects in a house in the village of Komsomolskoye, but they refused to surrender and killed Mayor Khvarazat Sharipov, who tried to persuade them to lay down their arms, the ministry said.
Sharipov managed to get a 4-year-old child out of the building but was then shot dead, it said.
Two police officers and two suspected militants also died in the standoff.
The security raid followed Sunday’s killing of a senior police official in Makhachkala and a shootout that left 10 suspected militants dead in the city.
