Napunyi who won the Olympic welterweight gold as Robert Wangila while representing Kenya at the 1988 Games died Sunday morning after the fight Friday. He was 26.
Napunyi had a blood clot on the right of his head, said Dr. Albert Capanna, who performed surgery on him Saturday. Napunyi was stopped in the ninth round against American welterweight David Gonzales. Napunyi left the ring under his own power and appeared to be all right.
