Zhirinovsky Rebuffed

BONN, Germany () -- Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel on Monday turned down a visa request from the Russian radical right leader, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who had planned to visit various German cities.

The government can refuse entry to foreigners who "damage or threaten the interests of the German republic," Kinkel said in a news release.

Zhirinovsky, dubbed the "Russian Hitler" by Germany's tabloid press, has unnerved German officials by at times threatening to use nuclear weapons against Germany, at other times speaking of dividing up the continent with the Germans.

He visited Germany briefly last December but subsequent visa requests have been turned down.

Zhirinovsky's plans apparently included speaking at a Sept. 24 rally of the extreme-right German People's Union.
