KIEV, Ukraine () -- Ukrainian lawmakers said Friday they will reject an appeal from the regional parliament in the restive Crimean peninsula to grant Ukrainian citizens the right to have dual nationality.

"Ukraine has only one constitution, which has no provision for what the Crimeans are asking for," said Volodymyr Stretovic, head of the Ukrainian parliament's legal commission.

Crimea's pro-Russia legislature voted 62-3 Thursday to approve the explosive appeal. It called on the government and the central parliament in Kiev to change the nation's Soviet-era constitution so as to allow Crimea's mostly Russian population to have dual Russian and Ukrainian citizenship
