Yankees' Price Tag

NEW YORK () -- New York City taxpayers could be asked to shell out at least $600 million to keep the Yankees in the Bronx, a city official said.

The mayoral aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Tuesday the plans for a bridge across the Harlem River directly into a stadium parking lot and upgrading Yankee Stadium with 100 new luxury boxes and wider concourses would add nearly $250 million to the previous estimate.

But New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's press secretary, Cristyne Lategano, on Tuesday said Giuliani is already thinking of a fallback decision -- possibly a new stadium on Manhattan's West Side -- if team owner George Steinbrenner insists on deserting the Bronx.
