WTO a Distant Goal

MOSCOW () -- Russia may not join the World Trade Organization, successor of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), before April next year, Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Davydov said Thursday.

"We have been negotiating for years to join the organization and I do not rule out the possibility that an additional year will be needed to achieve this goal," Davydov told reporters after a one-hour meeting with WTO's chairman Peter Sutherland.

The WTO is to absorb during 1995 the functions of the 124-nation GATT.
