Wives Block Tarmac

Wives of Russian air force pilots blocked an airfield in Russia's Far East region for the fourth day on Wednesday in protest over government failure to pay their husbands' wages, Itar-Tass said.

Tass said the command called off training flights at the airstrip on the island of Sakhalin after the women built bonfires on the tarmac. They said their husbands had not been paid any wages this year.

Russian servicemen are frequently left without proper pay and accommodation as the Defence Ministry struggles to cope with financial cutbacks and the burden imposed by the return of troops from Eastern Europe.
