A federal arrest warrant has been issued for former Vostok battalion leader Sulim Yamadayev, a powerful former Chechen rebel who has clashed with Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov.
Yamadayev is at large and wanted on charges of murder and kidnapping, Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said in a statement Thursday.
Kadyrov and Yamadayev are former rebels who switched sides and were rewarded with senior posts by Moscow. Tensions flared between the two on April 14, when a convoy of Vostok vehicles failed to yield to Kadyrov's motorcade, causing a crash and a scuffle in which at least two people were reportedly shot to death.
Kadyrov suspended Yamadayev from his duties in May and called on Chechen and military prosecutors to investigate whether troops from the Vostok battalion were linked to murders and kidnappings in the republic.
"Yamadayev must be arrested and prosecuted," Kommersant quoted Kadyrov as saying Thursday.
Yamadayev's brother, former State Duma Deputy Ruslan Yamadayev, told Kommersant that his brother was not hiding. "He is living in Moscow, and investigators know how to find him," Ruslan Yamadayev told the newspaper.
