Wage Rise Approved

MOSCOW -- Russia's Federation Council approved Friday a 40 percent rise in the minimum monthly wage, to 20,500 rubles ($10.10) from 14,600 rubles, Interfax reported. The raise will also affect government salaries, pensions and student stipends. The news agency quoted Russian Labor Minister Gennady Melikyan as saying that government employees have lost much of their purchasing power since their salaries were raised in December.
