Uzbek Skier Improving

LAKE PLACID, New York -- The condition of Olympic freestyle skiing aerials gold-medalist Lena Cherjazova has been upgraded from critical to serious, and doctors expressed hope that she would make a full recovery.


Officials at the Medical Center of Vermont, where Cherjazova, 25, has been hospitalized in a coma since she was critically injured a week ago while practicing at Lake Placid, said Wednesday the Uzbek skier was undergoing a battery of tests.


Cherjazova had lost her balance during a run, slammed her head into the ramp, falling 23 feet into a pool.
