U.S. Help for Holy Wine

HEALDSBURG, California -- California winemakers are going to Russia to try to lift the Orthodox Church's sagging spirits. The Sonoma County delegation has been asked to improve the quality of the church's sacramental wines, which are so bad that Russian Orthodox elders believe they are not worthy to embody the blood of Christ, said Father Thomas Devereaux, a pastor at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. "We were told the sacramental wines are almost undrinkable. They are sour and spoil easily," said Devereaux, who helped coordinate the mission. The request for help came from Russian Orthodox leader Alexy II, the patriarch of Moscow. The delegation left Sunday for their 10-day trip.
