U.S. Asks UN For Haiti OK

UNITED NATIONS -- U.S. Ambassador Madeleine Albright announced Thursday she was seeking U.N. approval for a U.S.-led force to use "all necessary means" to restore democracy in Haiti.

Albright did not use the word "invasion" but "all necessary means" is a catch phrase for military intervention. It was used when the council authorized U.S. troops to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait in 1991.

She said she was laying the "diplomatic groundwork" for future options the United States, and hoped the resolution would be adopted sometime next week.
