UPI's Stevenson Dies

STAMFORD, Connecticut () -- H.L. Stevenson, a former editor in chief of United Press International, has died in St. Josephs's Medical Center after a long illness, according to a hospital spokesman. He was 65.


Stevenson, a correspondent, editor, news executive and teacher for more than 40 years until the onset of his fatal illness last year, directed UPI coverage of major events including the Vietnam War, the Apollo moonshots and Watergate, from the mid-1960s until the early 1980s.


He got his start with the Picayune Item in Mississippi. He joined UPI in 1953, working in bureaus across the South until the early 1960s.
